HAMILTON
, N.Y. (10/21/06) – Boston College beat Colgate by 0.13 seconds in the 200 freestyle relay to earn a 151-149 win in the Raider women’s swimming and diving team’s home-opener on Saturday, Oct. 21, at Lineberry Natatorium.

Colgate held a 143-140 lead heading into the final event of the meet, the 200 free relay. The Raiders were behind by 1.04 seconds when sophomore Emily Murphy (Syracuse, N.Y.) hit the water to face Elizabeth Snyder in the final leg of the relay, but Murphy’s split of 23.54 wasn’t enough to make up the difference, and Colgate settled for second-place points. The Raiders’ time of 1:37.13 ranks third in school history.

Colgate started the day by winning the 200 medley relay by nearly 3.5 seconds. Sophomore Beverly Walker (Marietta, Ga.) led off with a split of 27.86 to give the Raiders a 0.79 second lead. Junior Kacy Reams (Evanston, Ill.) increased the lead with a split of 30.70 in the breaststroke leg. Freshman Kate Murphy (Williamsburg, Va.) swam the fly portion in less than 26 seconds, and sophomore Ashley Bottger (Weston, Conn.) raced to the finish with a 24.62 split as the anchor.

The Raiders won a total of eight individual events, including a combined five for CU’s Georgia natives: Marietta resident Walker led the way with three victories, while freshman Caitlin Curran (Alpharetta, Ga.) earned two wins.

Walker swept both backstroke events, finishing the 100 in 59.70 and swimming the 200 in 2:07.77. She also won the 100 fly with a time of 58.17, which places her seventh on Colgate’s all-time performances list.

Curran won both breaststroke events, and earned the ninth spot on each list on Colgate’s all-time performers chart. She turned in a time of 2:26.29 in the 200 breast, then beat two teammates for first place in the 100 breast with a time of 1:08.33. Reams was just behind her, finishing in 1:08.51, and freshman Alaina Sullivan (Shaker Heights, Ohio) was third with a time of 1:08.72.

Emily Murphy and classmate Lisa Marchi (Scottsdale, Ariz.) both posted personal-best times in the 50 free to finish one-two in the event. Murphy’s time of 24.52 moved her up to eighth on the all-time performers list, and Marchi’s 24.60 places her ninth on the same list.

After the first break, Marchi returned to the water to win the 100 free in 52.67. Emily Murphy came in third, posting a time of 53.71.

Freshman Kate Murphy (Williamsburg, Va.) won the 500 free, beating BC’s Kim Garcia with a time of 5:14.90. Classmate Karen Baker (Houston, Texas) finished third with a time of 5:22.18. Earlier in the day, Baker finished second in the 1000 free with a time of 11:01.41.

Senior Gretchen Swarr (Southport, Conn.) led the way on the boards, finishing second in the one-meter diving competition with 229.80 points, and coming in third on the three-meter board with 221.25 points, just 0.45 points behind the second-place finisher, BC’s Bradie Dwyer.
