HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/17/06) – Junior
Eric Anton (Tacoma, Wash.) scored two goals as the Colgate University men’s soccer team recorded a 2-0 shutout over Cornell on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at Van Doren Field.
The Raiders ended a three-game scoring drought at 7:44 of the first when senior
Devin Deane (Oswego, N.Y.) picked up the ball on the right flank and centered it up the field to a streaking Anton who shot the ball past goalkeeper Luca Cerretani.
Miyad Movassaghi had Cornell’s best chance of the half when he sailed a direct kick over the defensive line towards the goal that was stopped by a diving
Doug Litvack (Levittown, N.Y.).
Freshman
Chris Ross (Hurst, Texas) earned his first career point as he and Deane set up Anton for the second score of the game at 54:42. Ross crossed the ball to Deane on the left wing who then deked his defender and passed the ball to Anton who was just inside the 18-yard box at the left tip. Anton rifled a shot to the upper left 90 giving the Raiders the 2-0 lead.
Chris Ross was credited with the feed to Deane.
Cornell had a pair of excellent chances late in the second half. Tom Marks lofted a long shot towards the goal that Litvack had to tip over the cross bar at 80:34, and teammate Aaron Vieria had blasted a shot from 20 yards out that was punched away by Litvack just three minutes later.
The Big Red had a 20-11 advantage in shots, and both teams had four corner kicks apiece.
Litvack made nine saves in his third shutout of the season, and Cerretani stopped two for Cornell.
Colgate is now 7-1-5 on the season, while Cornell falls to 2-6-3.
The Raiders will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 21 when they host nationally-ranked Lehigh at 7 p.m., at Van Doren Field. Pivotal league points will be on the line as the Patriot League Tournament is just two weeks away.
