Box Score
HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/15/06) – Senior forward
Marc Fulton (Vancouver, B.C.) recorded his first career hat trick and had a hand in all five Raider goals as Colgate (2-2-0) skated to a 5-1 win against Bentley (0-1-0) on Sunday, Oct. 15, at Starr Rink.
Early in the first period, Colgate set up in the zone on a power play. Fulton and classmate
Mike Campaner (Thunder Bay, Ont.) passed the puck back and forth before Campaner gave it to freshman
David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.) at the top of the right faceoff circle. McIntyre let go a slapshot that went off the leg of a Bentley player in front of the net and trickled between the legs of Falcons starting goalie Ray Jean for McIntyre’s first collegiate goal.
Bentley evened the score 2:05 later. Jeff Gumaer won a battle along the boards and got the puck to Menzione in front of the net. Menzione attempted a backhand shot, but didn’t get it through. The puck rolled across the goalmouth, and was tipped past the right leg of junior goalie
Mark Dekanich (North Vancouver, B.C.) by Blake Hamilton.
Just 1:04 later, at the 5:43 mark, the Raiders regained their lead. Sophomore
Tom Riley (Ottawa, Ont.) held the puck behind the net, and passed it to junior
Dustin Gillanders (Kyle, Sask.), who one-timed a pass to Fulton. Fulton found nylon with a snapshot over the blocker of Jean.
After the teams combined for three goals within 3:09, neither team scored for nearly 19 minutes. Freshman
Jason Williams (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) got the puck to Fulton in front of the net, and Fulton’s shot went off the skate of a Bentley defender and between the legs of Jean for his second straight goal. The assist was the first collegiate point for Williams.
Early in the third period, Fulton completed the natural hat trick. Junior
Ben Camper (Rocky River, Ohio) brought the puck out from behind the net and created a scramble in front of Jean. Senior captain
Liam Huculak (Lethbridge, Alta.) jammed at the puck and was stopped, but Fulton picked up the rebound and put it in the net past Jean low on his blocker side.
McIntyre scored his second goal of the day on a long 5-on-3 opportunity for the Raiders with 10:31 on the clock. Fulton passed to Riley at the left point, who found a clear lane and one-timed the puck toward the goal. The puck squirted out from between Jean’s pads behind him, and McIntyre was on the doorstep to sweep it home.
After Colgate’s fifth goal, Jean was relieved by sophomore Jason Kearney, who made three saves over the final 10:31. Jean finished the game with 39 stops as Colgate outshot Bentley 47-18. Dekanich only need to make 17 saves to earn the win.
Special teams played a big role in the game, as 71 minutes worth of penalties were handed out. The Falcons were unable to capitalize on any of their 11 attempts in spite of taking 14 of their 18 shots with a man advantage. The Raiders finished 2-for-15 on the power play, and attempted 25 shots, including 13 in the third period, when playing a man up.
Colgate dominated in the faceoff circle, winning 55 draws to Bentley’s 26. Junior
Tyler Burton (Langley, B.C.) led the way with 23 wins on 31 attempts, and McIntyre was 12-for-14 on the day.
The Raiders will rest for nine days before hosting Canisius on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 7:00 p.m. Tickets for all Colgate home games are available by calling the Raider ticket office at (315) 228-7600.
