(10/12/06) – The Colgate men’s hockey team scored two first-period goals and held on to earn a 2-1 win against Niagara at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester on Thursday, Oct. 12. The win was the first for the Raiders this season, as they improve to 1-2-0 overall. The Purple Eagles now stand at 1-2-0.
Colgate got its first goal 3:52 into the first period. Junior
Jesse Winchester (Long Sault, Ont.) won the faceoff back to sophomore
Jason Fredricks (Eagle River, Wis.) at the right point. Fredricks passed to defensive partner
Nick St. Pierre (St. Etienne, Que.), who gave the puck right back. Fredricks shot from the point and buried the puck in the upper left corner for his first career goal.
The Raiders took a 2-0 lead 37 seconds later. Freshman
David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.) carried the puck behind the net, but was knocked off the play by a Niagara player. Sophomore
Peter Bogdanich (Burnaby, Ont.) picked up the loose puck and wrapped it around the right side of the net for his first goal of the season.
Niagara ruined the shutout bid of Colgate junior goaltender
Mark Dekanich (North Vancouver, B.C.) 8:44 into the third period with a power-play goal. Chris Moran held the puck at the left point, and passed it down low to Ted Cook on the left side. Cook sent it over to Les Reaney in front of the net, who shot at Dekanich. Dekanich made the initial save, but gave up the rebound and Reaney grabbed the puck and scored over the sprawled netminder.
Each team finished the game with 22 shots on goal. Dekanich made 21 saves to earn the win, while Niagara’s Juliano Pagliero registered 20 stops in the loss.
Colgate returns home for an intrasquad scrimmage on Friday, Oct. 13, at 7:00 p.m. The Raiders play Bentley in a regular-season game at home on Sunday, Oct. 15, at 2:00 p.m. Tickets for all Colgate home games are available through the ticket office by calling (315) 228-7600.
