WEST POINT, N.Y. (01/07/06)—Army sophomore guard Cara Enright knocked down a jumper with under second left in the game to force overtime and added scored six points in overtime to lead the Black Knights to an 85-81 overtime victory over Colgate University in Patriot League women’s basketball action this evening. Sophomore guard Melanie Cargle (Trotwood, Ohio) led all Raider scorers with 23 points and a team-high six rebounds.
Colgate (2-11) went on a 14-4 run in the opening minutes of the second half, jumping ahead 49-39. The Raiders built their biggest lead of the half at 58-44 at the 11:05 mark with a jumper from the left wing by sophomore guard Shevorne Martin (Brooklyn, N.Y.). The Black Knights chipped away at the lead and used a 7-2 run in the final 3:43 to force overtime at 72-72. Army capitalized on a pair of missed free throws by Colgate at the 2:49 mark to, scoring five of the game’s final seven points.
Sophomore forward Caitlin Gillard (Vestal, N.Y.) scored a career-high 16 points, while Devon Warwick (Amesbury, Mass.) had a season-high 12 points. Martin added a career-high nine points and tied her career-high with five rebounds.
Enright led all Army scorers with 20 points, while Stefanie Stone had 16 points. Alex McGuire, Megan Vrabel, and Erin Begonia also had double digit performances with 16-, 14, and 12 points, respectively. Stone led the Black Knights on the boards with seven rebounds.
Army (7-7) and Colgate traded baskets in the first half with neither team leading by more than six. The Raiders went ahead 17-15 on a basket by Gillard, but McGuire scored eight of the game’s next 11 points to put Army ahead 23-20 at the 5:50 mark.
The back and forth action continued down the stretch as Colgate jumped up 35-33 on a layup by Cargle with 10 seconds on the clock before Stone hit a runner in the paint to send the two squads into the break tied at 35 apiece.
Cargle led all Colgate scorers with 10 points and pulled down three rebounds, while Martin chipped in seven points. McGuire paced the Black Knights with 10 points at the half.
The Raiders shot 48.4 percent (15-of-31) from the floor in the half, while the Black Knights knocked down an impressive 61.1 percent (11-of-18) of their shots from the field. The Colgate defense forced Army into 15 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes.
Colgate returns to action on Jan. 10, traveling to Patriot League foe Lafayette College for a 7 p.m., contest.
