DURHAM, N.H. (1/4/06) - The Colgate University women’s ice hockey team fell 7-0 to No. 2/3 University of New Hampshire on Wednesday, Jan. 4 at the Whittemore Center.

Colgate netminder Brook Wheeler (Brussels, Ont.) made 38 total saves, including 12 in the first period to hold UNH scoreless through one. The Wildcats broke the 0-0 stalemate early in the second, scoring four, and then added three more in the third for the final 7-0 score.

Jennifer Hitchcock had the first strike just 40 seconds into the second stanza, with help from Sam Faber and Amy McLaughlin. The Wildcats added another when they pulled goaltender Melissa Bourdon at 2:48 for the extra attacker because of a delayed Colgate penalty. Fourteen seconds later Faber capitalized, when she connected with Hitchcock and Nicole Goguen, who had the initial shot from the right point.

Sadie Wright-Ward and Angela Taylor scored two goals within 25 seconds to increase the Wildcats’ lead to 4-0. Wright-Ward batted in a Faber rebound in front of the net at 14:24 before Taylor scored on a breakaway, going top shelf with a pass form Nicole Hekle at 14:49.

Lindsay Hansen scored at 2:47 of the third when she went five hole on Wheeler. Shannon Clement tallied the lone power-play marker of the game at 6:21 of the second. Taylor took a shot from the high slot that was picked up by Taylor Palazeti who then passed to Clement, who put the puck away. Wright-Ward added her second of the game at 12:13 to close out the scoring with a shot low in the slot with Jackie Wedster earning the assist.

Bourdon made 11 saves for the Wildcats, who extend their win streak to nine games with a 14-2-0 record, while the Raiders fall to 7-6-3.

Colgate, without the talents of Tara French (Truro, N.S.) and Becky Irvine (Lakeview, N.S.), went up against a strong UNH team that entered tonight’s contest with the second best scoring offense and defense in the country as well as the longest current unbeaten streak in the country.

The Raiders return to Hamilton and to its ECACHL schedule on Saturday, January 7 when they host No. 9 Harvard at 2 p.m. The game will be televised locally on Time Warner Sports, channel 26. The following day, on January 8, the Raiders face off with Dartmouth with a game time of 2 p.m.
