PROVIDENCE, R.I. (9/25/05) - Freshman Lauren Carey (Medfield, Mass.) scored her second goal of the weekend midway through the second half in Colgate’s 3-1 loss to Providence on Sunday, Sept. 25. The Raiders enter Patriot League competition on Saturday with a 5-4 overall record, while the Friars improve to 3-8 on the season.
Providence got on the board just over seven minutes into the game when Melissa McGow assisted on a Jessica Weinstein goal. Emily Ewens made it 2-0 with 13:24 left in the opening half when she scored off a feed from Kati Lary. McGow assisted on a Lauren Sickel goal less than seven minutes later to give the Friars a 3-0 halftime lead.
Carey’s goal came with 17:54 left in the game. She was the only Raider to attempt more than one shot in the game, finishing with three. Providence outshot Colgate 26-5, with all five of the Raiders’ shots coming in the second half. The Friars were awarded 14 penalty corners to Colgate’s five, with all five Raider corners happening after the break.
Colgate junior goalkeeper Jacque DeMarco (Hudson, Ohio) made a season-high 15 saves, while Stephanie Scavelli made two stops for the win.
The Raiders play their first Patriot League game of the season on Saturday, Oct. 1 when they take on Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., at 12:00 p.m.
