HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/8/05) - Bucknell sophomore Katie Leinen scored a breakaway goal with less than nine minutes left in the second half to give the Bison (4-7, 1-1 Patriot League) a 3-2 win against the Colgate field hockey team (5-8, 0-2 PL) on Saturday, Oct. 8, at Tyler’s Field.
Leinen received the heads-up pass near the top of the circle, and went in against Raider goalie Jacque DeMarco (Hudson, Ohio) one-on-one. Leinen faked the shot, DeMarco went down, and Leinen beat her on the right side to score the game-winner.
Bucknell scored the first goal of the game less than five minutes into the first period on a penalty corner. Alex Kyzmir served as the inbounder, and Anne Lutz stopped the ball for Amanda Faust.
Colgate got on the board less than four minutes later. Freshman Laura Flisnik (Marcy, N.Y.) stole the ball near midfield, and dribbled it all the way down into the circle. She passed to classmate Amanda Gilmore (Chalfont, Pa.) on the far side of the circle, who fired it past Bison netminder Liz Jordan for her first career goal.
The Raiders earned a 2-1 lead with 3:24 left in the opening half with a goal on a penalty corner. Freshman Lauren Carey (Medfield, Mass.) inbounded the ball to classmate Maddie Watrobski (Penfield, N.Y.), who stopped it for senior Dana Shaner (Pottstown, Pa.). Shaner shot from the top of the circle to record her ninth goal of the season. With the goal, she moves into a tie for 14th on Colgate’s career chart with 18 goals in three-plus seasons.
The teams played nearly 24 scoreless minutes in the second half. The Bison got the equalizer coming out of a timeout. Sophomore Chyncia Smith took a long pass from the far sideline on the restart, and shot from 15 feet out. Raider sophomore Heather Davis (Greene, N.Y.) blocked the shot, but the rebound came out to Katie Watt, who beat DeMarco to the right.
Bucknell outshot Colgate 11-9 on the afternoon, and had four penalty corners to Colgate's one. Jordan finished with six saves, including five in the first half, while DeMarco posted two stops.
Colgate will recognize its three seniors when it plays its final home game of the season on Saturday, Oct. 15, against Lafayette. The first passback is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Admission to all Raider home games is free.
