WASHINGTON, D.C. (10/29/05) - The Colgate University field hockey team lost its final game of the season 9-1 to No. 5 American on Saturday, Oct. 29, at Reeves Field. The Raiders finish their season with a 6-11 overall record and a 1-4 mark in the Patriot League, while the Eagles improve to 16-1 overall and 4-0 in the conference.
Freshman Amanda Gilmore (Chalfont, Pa.) gave Colgate a brief 1-0 lead 4:39 into the game with her second goal of the season. Less than three minutes later, Shannon Goans scored the first of her four goals to tie it up, and American never looked back.
The Eagles held a 5-1 lead at halftime, including netting a pair of goals just 56 seconds apart and another with just four seconds left in the first half. Javiera Villagra finished with three goals, while Camila and Denise Infante each finished with a goal and an assist.
Junior Jacque DeMarco (Hudson, Ohio) started in the cage for Colgate and made nine saves on 16 attempts in 49:24. She was relieved by senior Carolyn Daly (Newark Valley, N.Y.), who made one stop on three shots during the final 20:36. Allison Fayfich started the game for the Eagles, and Makinsie Sheridan played the second half, making AU’s only two saves of the game.
American outshot Colgate 34-4, including a 20-1 advantage in the first half. The Eagles were awarded six penalty corners to Colgate’s one.
American’s nine goals were the most Colgate has allowed since the first game of the 1997 season when the Raiders lost 11-2 to Connecticut.
