Raiders Lose to Cornell in Field Hockey, 4-3

ITHACA, N.Y. (10/18/05) - The Colgate field hockey team erased a three-goal deficit to pull even with Cornell, 3-3, but could not hold on as the Big Red defeated the Raiders, 4-3, on Tuesday, Oct. 18, at Schoellkopf Field in Ithaca, N.Y. Colgate had several penalty corner opportunities in the waning minutes of the game, including one with 10 seconds left in regulation, but could not convert. The team is now 6-9 overall this season.

Lizzie Auer took a long pass by Natalie Serle from the near sideline and beat Raider goalkeeper Jacque DeMarco (Hudson, Ohio) to her left to open the scoring for Cornell 20:02 into the game. The Big Red went up 2-0 when Alyssa DePaola's shot rebounded off DeMarco to Mandy Malzberg, who beat the Colgate goalie stick-side. It became a 3-0 game less than four minutes later. DePaola got tripped up by her defender, and DeMarco came out to play the ball. However, DePaola was able to pass to Brenna Gulotta, and DeMarco was barely back in position when the shot hit the back of the cage.

Senior co-captain Dana Shaner (Pottstown, Pa.) got Colgate on the board when she scored at the 29:16 mark. After dribbling the ball around Cornell's defenders, she shot from 10 yards out on the right side of the circle, cutting the ball to the left of the goalie.

The Raiders made it a one-goal game three minutes later. Senior Jenn Weisholz (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) had the ball in the upper right portion of the circle. She passed it to freshman Lauren Carey (Medfield, Mass.), who was waiting at the goal mouth to the left of Cornell netminder Lizzie Goldblatt, and scored into the open cage.

Colgate tied it up during the 50th minute of play. Sophomore Lauren Remkus (Miller Place, N.Y.) picked up the ball as it bounced around in front of the net after Goldblatt came out to play it and scored behind her.

Cornell netted the go-ahead tally exactly three minutes later. DePaola picked up the ball off a rebound and dribbled it around DeMarco, who was out of position making the initial save.

Cornell outshot Colgate 20-14 on the night, including a 12-4 advantage in the first half. DeMarco finished with 10 saves, while Goldblatt had eight stops.

The Raiders return to Patriot League action when they travel to Bethlehem, Pa., to take on Lehigh on Saturday, Oct. 22, at 1:00 p.m.
