WEST CHESTER, Pa. (9/23/05) - West Chester senior forward Megan Glielmi scored four goals to lead WCU to a second-half, comeback victory, 6-2, against the Colgate field hockey team on Friday, Sept. 23. The total is the second-highest goal total by a Golden Ram in school history. With the win WCU stands at 5-4 while Colgate drops to 5-3.
Freshman Lauren Carey (Medfield, Mass.) gave the Raiders a 1-0 lead when she scored her first career goal 6:46 into the game. Glielmi tied it up on a goal set up by Erin Arrowood four minutes later. With 6:20 left in the first half, freshman Laura Flisnik (Marcy, N.Y.) re-established Colgate’s one-goal lead with her fifth goal of the season.
The two teams played the first half fairly evenly. Colgate was awarded three penalty corners to West Chester’s two, and the Golden Rams edged the Raiders in shots, 5-4. The second half, however, was a different story.
The floodgates opened with Glielmi’s second goal of the game 6:44 into the second half to tie the game at 2-2. Mary Ellen Wells scored off an assist from Bethany Fritz 2:05 later to make it 3-2. Glielmi scored twice within less than three minutes around the 60-minute mark to give WCU a 5-2 lead, and Kelly Olinger iced the game with 2:30 on the clock on a goal that was assisted by Jenna Frankenfield.
West Chester outshot Colgate 13-1 in the second half for an 18-5 advantage in the game. The Golden Rams had the only three penalty corners of the second half. Raider junior co-captain Jacque DeMarco (Hudson, Ohio) made 12 saves in the cage, and Carrie Hanshue made three stops for the win.
Colgate travels to Rhode Island for its final warm-up before the start of Patriot League competition. The Raiders will take on Providence on Sunday, Sept. 25, at 1:00 p.m.
