BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (1/3/06) - The No. 14/12 Colgate hockey team was shut out for the first time this season as Bowling Green skated to a 4-0 victory at BGSU Ice Arena on Tuesday, Jan. 3.
The Raiders got out to a sluggish start and were outshot 18-7 during the first period. For the game, the Falcons held a 31-22 advantage in shots on goal, as Colgate was outshot for the third consecutive game. BGSU goalie Jon Horrell made 22 saves for the shutout, while Raider netminder Mark Dekanich (North Vancouver, B.C.) posted 27 stops.
Bowling Green capitalized on its third power-play opportunity of the first period to get on the scoreboard. On the first set-up of the man advantage, Brandon Svendsen cycled the puck to Jonathan Matsumoto on the right side. Matsumoto gave it back to him, and Svendsen one-timed it from the high slot past three Colgate defenders and under Dekanich’s blocker.
Early in the second, BGSU went up 2-0. With a man on him and 13:06 on the clock, Brett Pilkington attempted a bad-angle shot from low on the right side and put it top shelf.
The Falcons built a 3-0 advantage 10:42 into the middle session. After withstanding a flurry of shots, Colgate gained possession and began moving it out of the zone. However, the Raiders turned it over and Alex Foster wristed the puck into the back of the net from between the faceoff circles.
BGSU finished off the Raiders with 3:33 on the clock. Michael Hodgson had the puck in the left corner. He centered it to Ryan Barnett, who one-timed from the right side of the crease.
Colgate hosts St. Cloud State, Friday and Saturday, Jan. 6-7, at Starr Rink. Both games begin at 7:00 p.m., and they mark the first-ever meetings between the two squads. Tickets are available through the Raider box office by calling (315) 228-7600.
