CANTON, N.Y. (1/21/06) - The Colgate University women’s ice hockey team shocked No. 3 St. Lawrence with a 3-0 shutout on Saturday, Jan. 21. Colgate made history, scoring three short-handed goals in the game, a feat the Raiders had never accomplished in its nine-year history and one the Saints had never allowed.

“We stepped up our game from last night and we challenged them,” said head coach Scott Wiley. “Our team played extremely smart today. We were very opportunistic and gave up very few second chances. It was a great win for our program.”

Colgate came out with fire to start the game not at all intimidated by the St. Lawrence stats or standings.

St. Lawrence, which sports the fourth best power-play unit in the country, was shut down early by Colgate. Freshman Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) skated up the middle and sent a pass to the left side of the net to Elin Brown (Calgary, Alta.). With Jess Moffat hovering over the left side, Brown swung the puck back to the right side to Hunt who had the clean shot on net. Kiira Dosdall (Fairfield, Conn.) was also credited with the assist on Hunt’s second short-handed tally of the season.

The Raiders surprised Moffat and the Saint power-play unit, which scored four of their five goals against the Big Red on the man advantage on Jan. 20, when Colgate had another great short-handed opportunity with just 1:18 remaining when senior Allison Paiano (Orleans, Ont.) skated in alone but had her shot squashed by Moffat.

Colgate ended the first killing off all three penalties. Brook Wheeler (Brussels, Ont.) made her first appearance between the pipes for Colgate since the Jan. 7 game versus Harvard, making 17 saves in the first stanza. Moffat made three stops.

With Ruth Fish (Syracuse, N.Y.) in the box for a hooking penalty, Colgate recorded its short-handed goal of the game. Senior Becky Irvine (Lakeview, N.S.) picked up the puck at the defensive blue line and skated in alone up the right side, going one-one-one with Moffat. Irvine deked Moffat faking a shot on the right and then sneaking one in on the left at 15:17. Hunt was credited with the feed to Irvine.

St. Lawrence had a short-handed opportunity of its own with just over one minute to play in the middle frame. Freshman Alison Domenico connected at the blue line but pushed the puck ahead of her a little to far and Wheeler was able to get to it first.

Wheeler turned away 14 in the second, to Moffat’s three. St. Lawrence went 0-for-3 on the power play, while Colgate was 0-for-2.

Brown added Colgate’s third goal when she stole the puck from St. Lawrence’s Abbie Bullard down in the left circle and ripped a shot off. The puck rebounded off the pads of Moffat back to Brown’s stick where she tucked in her own rebound just under the cross bar at 8:25 for the Raiders’ third short-handed goal of the contest.

Tara French went in the penalty box with just 55.8 seconds remaining, which prompted St. Lawrence to pull Moffat for the extra attacker. The Raiders were able to hold on during the 6-on-4 for the win.

Wheeler backstopped the Raiders to a career-high 51 saves, earning the first star of the game. Moffat had nine saves in the contest for St. Lawrence.

The Raiders are back in action next weekend when they travel to New England, taking on Yale on Friday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m., and playing Brown on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 4 p.m.
