Stony Brook Defeats Colgate 70-57 In Final Non-Conference Game

STONY BROOK, N.Y. (1/2/06) – Mitchell Beauford scored a game-high 20 points and Tre Cunningham added 15 points and eight rebounds to lead Stony Brook to a 70-55 win over Colgate Monday night in the final non-conference game this season for the Raiders.

 

The Seawolves (1-9) snapped a 10-game losing streak dating back to the final game of last season, while Colgate (6-8) remains winless on the road in six outings.

 

Bobby Santiago had 14 points and six rebounds for the Seawolves, while Stephane Bakinde hauled down six boards.

 

Colgate was led by sophomore Kyle Roemer with 16 points, including four 3-pointers, and seven rebounds. Jon Simon added 11 points, and Kendall Chones had 10 points and seven rebounds.

 

Stony Brook out-rebounded the Raiders 39-29 including 21 offensive boards.

 

The Seawolves jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Roemer scored from 3-point range with 14:38 remaining in the first half. Roemer’s 3-pointer started an 11-4 run for the Raiders, who came back to take a 11-9 lead with 11:07 remaining. Trailing 9-6, Kendall Chones made a jumper followed by Todd Checovich’s jumper and a free throw by Simon for Colgate’s first lead of the contest.

 

With Colgate leading 15-14 with 7:28 remaining, Stony Brook scored five straight points to move in front by four points on a three-point play by Beauford and a jumper by Cunningham. That was the start of a 17-7 run as the Seawolves enjoyed a 31-23 halftime advantage.

 

Colgate had a difficult time finding the basket in the first half as they made only 6-of-18 shots. After Checovich scored at the 11:44 mark, the Raiders made only one field goal over the next 10:33 of the opening half. Roemer, with his third 3-pointer of the game, ended the drought with 1:09 left.

 

The biggest statistic of the first half was Stony Brook out-rebounding the Raiders, 19-15, which included 12 offensive boards for the Seawolves.

 

Colgate opened the second half with a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to three points, 33-30. The Seawolves answered right back with a 6-2 run to put the lead back to a seven-point advantage, 39-32.

 

A 7-2 run by Colgate would cut Stony Brook’s lead to two points, 41-39, with 13:10 remaining. Alvin Reed had five points and Dan Gentile added a basket for the Raiders.

After the Seawolves opened another seven-point lead, 48-41, the Raiders managed to cut the deficit to two points, 53-51, with 4:52 left. Colgate, however, wouldn’t score another field goal until there was 43 seconds remaining, managing only two free throws during that stretch. Stony Brook, meanwhile, was making 15 of its last 18 points from the free throw line.

 

GAME NOTES … Kendall Chones scored his 300th career point … Roemer has made a 3-point field goal in 17 straight games … Stony Brook came into the contest making only 44 percent of its foul shots, but finished 23-of-33 against the Raiders.
