CALGARY (1/2/06) – Hockey Canada has announced its roster for the National Women’s Under-22 team that will be competing in Europe this week. Colgate University’s Tara French (Truro, N.S.) and Becky Irvine (Lakeview, N.S.) have both been selected to the prestigious squad.
The team will compete at the 2006 European Air Canada Cup in Ravensburg, Germany from January 5-7. Competing in the Cup will be the German and Swedish senior teams and the Finnish under-20 team.
The Canadians will play in an exhibition game against the Germans on Tuesday, January 3 in Hellbronn, Germany at 8 p.m. The round-robin tournament will begin on Thursday, January 5 when the Canadians face off with the Finns at 12:30 p.m. On Friday, January 6 Canada will play Switzerland at 1:30 p.m., and on Saturday, January 7 they will play the Germans in the final game at 8 p.m. (all game times are local time)
French will be keeping a journal of her experiences in Germany and will share that on the official Colgate University athletics Web site at www.gocolgateraiders.com.
Irvine and French are currently in a three-way tie in scoring for Colgate with 15 points each. The team’s top blueliner, French needs just one point to become Colgate’s all-time scoring defenseman. Irvine will reach a milestone herself this season, as she needs just five points to become a member of the Century Club. She could become the first Colgate player to reach the 100-point mark playing all four years at the Division I level.
The Colgate women’s hockey team will travel to No. 2/3 University of New Hampshire on Wednesday, January 4 for a 7 p.m., non-conference match-up. The Raiders return to Starr Rink when they take on No. 9 Harvard and Dartmouth on Saturday and Sunday, both games start at 2 p.m. Saturday’s game against perennial power Harvard will be televised live on Time Warner Sports.
