This was Lehigh’s (11-8. PL 4-0) first win over Colgate (7-11, PL 1-3) at Cotterell Court since the 1990-91 season. The Mountain Hawks had dropped 14 straight during that stretch.
With the victory, the Mountain Hawks remain in a first place tie with Bucknell, which defeated Lafayette, 62-32, Wednesday night.
Colgate was led by senior guard Alvin Reed with 14 points. Reed became the 24th player in school history to score over 1,000 points in a career. Kendall Chones was Colgate’s only other player in double figures with 12 points.
It was a poor-shooting night for both teams. Colgate shot 35.7 percent from the field, while Lehigh managed 38.1 percent. From behind the arc, Lehigh shot nine percent (1-of-11), while Colgate was slightly better at 11.1 percent (2-of-18).
Colgate managed to out-rebound the Mountain Hawks, 37-29, led by Kendall Chones with seven boards.
With the score tied at 19-19 in the first half, Lehigh scored the final five points from the foul line for a 24-19 halftime lead.
In the second half, Colgate came back to take a 33-31 lead on an old-fashion 3-point play by Kyle Chones with 10:04 remaining. Later in the second half, with Colgate leading 37-35, the Mountain Hawks scored eight straight to take control of the contest with 3:07 left. Colgate cut the deficit to four points on four occasions in the final three minutes, but Knight made eight straight free throws to seal the victory.
