American Defeats Colgate 74-66 In Patriot League Home Opener

HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/14/06) – Arvydas Eitutavicius scored a game-high 20 points to lead American University to a 74-66 win over Colgate Saturday in a Patriot League game at Cotterell Court.

 

American (5-11, PL 1-2) snapped a three-game losing streak while spoiling Colgate’s Patriot League home opener. The Raiders fall to 7-10 overall and 1-2 in the league.

 

Other AU players in double figures were Andre Ingram with 15 points and Paulius Joneliunas with 12 points. Joneliunas and Jordan Nichols had six rebounds apiece for the Eagles.

 

Kyle Roemer was Colgate’s leading scorer with 16 points, including four 3-pointers, followed by Kendall Chones with 14 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season, and Alvin Reed with 10 points.

 

After Colgate scored the opening basket on a jumper by Reed, AU scored six straight points and never trailed again. The Eagles moved out to their biggest lead of the first half at halftime, 37-19.

 

In the second half, Colgate fell behind by 19 points with 10:09 left, before cutting the deficit to seven points with 2:49 remaining. That was as close as the Raiders would get to the Eagles.

 

American only scored one field goal in the final 10:09 while making 19-of-24 from the charity stripe during that period of time.

 

American shot 44.4 percent from the field, while Colgate managed only 39.7. The Raiders were 10-of-24 from 3-point range, while AU was 4-of-10. The Eagles finished the contest 30-of-41 from the charity stripe. Colgate was 10-of-15 in free throws.

 

GAME NOTES: Colgate’s Dan Gentile had a career-high six rebounds … Reed with three steals became the sixth player in school history to record over 250 assists and 100 steals … Roemer moved into ninth place in career 3-pointers made with 95.
