HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/13/06) - Colgate women’s ice hockey dominated control of the first period, but couldn’t maintain momentum in the final two sessions, as No. 8/9 Princeton scored two en route to a 2-1 victory on Friday, January 13 at Starr Rink.
Freshman Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) skated in from the right boards and sent a high shot over the shoulder of Roxanne Gaudiel at 7:43 of the first period to light the lamp for the Raiders. Hunt was set up by freshman Elin Brown (Calgary, Alta.) and junior Carly McNaughton (Lethbridge, Alta.).
The Tigers battled back and quickly evened the game just 52 seconds into the second stanza with a tally from junior Kim Pearce. Chrissy Norwich sent a shot at Elayna Hamashuk (Nepean, Ont.) from the right side, Hamashuk went to the right to turn away the shot but it rebounded out to Pearce who was waiting at the opposite post and sent the puck flying into the open net before Hamashuk could recover.
Marykate Oakley sent a centering pass to Sarah Butsch after deking a couple of Colgate defenders as they skated into the offensive zone. Butsch pick up the pass in the slot and wristed the puck over the blocker of Hamashuk at 9:48 of the second.
Hamashuk made 35 saves in her second consecutive ECACHL start for the Raiders, while Gaudiel stopped 18 for the Tigers.
Both teams’ penalty-killing units were solid, with Princeton going 0-for-5 on the power-play and Colgate going 0-for-4. The Tigers had the advantage in shots in all three periods; 9-7 in the first, 11-7 in the second, and 17-5 in the third.
