HAMILTON, N.Y. (09/25/05) - Junior Jackie Burch (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) scored the game-winning goal for Colgate at 106:34, to give the Raiders the 3-2 victory over Columbia on Sunday afternoon.
With just 3:26 remaining, sophomore Franny Iacuzzi (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) took a shot on net. Columbia’s Rebecca Taylor went to grab the ball but it bounced off her arms right to the feet of Burch who knocked it home for the game-winning goal.
After a scoreless first half, Columbia’s Lindesey Knowles opened the scoring, with her goal of the season, when she and teammate Courtney Nasshorn found themselves in a two on one situation deep into the Lion zone. Nasshorn had the ball on the left side, just inside the box, and sent a cross pass behind the Colgate defender to Knowles who took the shot from 10-yards out that went past Luisa Miller (Washington, D.C./National Cathedral) to give Columbia the 1-0 lead at 54:50.
Just over three minutes later Jaime Dennison (East Hartford, Conn./EO Smith) looked to take a shot on net, the ball made a tricky bounce on the slippery grass and hopped over Taylor. Colgate’s Josie Johnson (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) put a head on the ball that was still suspended in the air and sent it forward to the back of the net to even the game at one apiece.
Iacuzzi made it 2-1 Colgate after she rifled a shot from 15-yards out at 70:13. Keeper Taylor never saw it coming as the ball went flying past her on the right side. Burch was credited with the assist.
Columbia’s Nasshorn picked up a Yasha MacDonald cross pass inside the box three minutes later and snuck to the right corner pocket past Miller.
Iacuzzi had a great chance to score the game-winner at 2:27 when she had a two on one. With the ball just out in front of her, Taylor came out of the box and fell on top of the ball and scrambled to pick it up before Iacuzzi could get a second chance at it.
Miller made a season-high ten stops in net for the Raiders to improve her record to 4-3-1. Columbia’s Taylor was also impressive, making ten saves in just her first collegiate start.
Colgate kicks off the Patriot League schedule on Saturday, October 1 at 7 p.m. when they host Bucknell.
