HAMILTON, N.Y. (09/21/05) - Colgate University and Syracuse University played to a 0-0 scoreless tie at Van Doren Field on Wednesday evening in women’s soccer action. It was the first overtime session for both teams.
The Orange (2-5-1) outshot the Raiders 17-11, while Colgate one-upped Syracuse on corner kicks, 6-5. Syracuse increased its lead to 8-1-1 in the all-time series with Colgate.
Colgate’s Luisa Miller (Washington, D.C./National Cathedral) made seven saves and Syracuse’s Candice Hofmann made four stops in her first collegiate start in net.
Syracuse had a great opportunity to break the deadlock with just 23 seconds remaining in the second overtime when Nicole Spartano sent a shot from the right side of the field to the net. With Miller out of position, Jill Fonseca ran to the goal line, squared her shoulders and knocked the ball up, to hit the cross bar and go out of bounds.
The Raiders’ best opportunity came midway through the second stanza when Jordyn Lexton (New York, N.Y./The Dalton School), came off the bench. She got tangled up with her defender and managed to get her shot knocked away. Josie Johnson (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier)and Hofman both raced for the ball. Johnson got to the ball first but Hofman threw herself on the ball to keep Johnson from getting any closer to the net.
Colgate takes three days off to rest before returning to Van Doren Field on Sunday, September 25th when they take on Columbia at 1 p.m.
