BURLINGTON, VT. (09/21/05) – Vermont’s Jesse Brady-Searby and Jordan Crasilneck combined on the game-winning goal in overtime to lift Vermont to a 2-1 win over Colgate in men’s soccer at sun-drenched Centennial Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Just over seven minutes into extra time, Crasilneck’s well-placed corner kick was nodded home by Brady-Searby to give the Catamounts (6-2-0) a hard fought victory. The win allows Vermont to bounce back from its first two losses of the season last weekend at the Vanderbilt Puma Classic. Winners of all four home games this season, UVM also extended its unbeaten streak at Centennial Field to 11 games (8-0-3). The loss was the first of the season for the Raiders (3-1-2).
The Catamounts carried the play right from the start and out-shot the Raiders, 11-1, in the first half. UVM drew first blood 1:02 after halftime as Crasilneck, on a free kick from just above the penalty area, set up Corey Bronner in front of Colgate keeper Doug Litvack (Levittown, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran). Coming across the field from the left post, Bronner’s shot snuck across the goal line in front of a diving Litvack.
Colgate battled back and picked up the equalizer in the 65th minute. Charlie Lambropoulos (Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West) pushed the ball down the left side and hooked a cross in front of the Vermont goal. Leaping high into traffic, Sean O’Sullivan (Brooksville, Fla./Central High) headed in the feed from five yards out for his first goal of the season. This was senior captain O’Sullivan’s first game of the 2005 campaign as he has been out with an injury.
Both teams in regulation had solid opportunities to break the tie, especially Matt Chew for Vermont and Eric Anton (Tacoma, Wash./Charles Wright Academy) for the Raiders before Brady-Searby and Crasilneck teamed up on the game-winner.
Tom Critz made two saves for Vermont, both in the second half, while Litvack made five stops for Colgate. Backed by the early edge, UVM out-shot the Raiders, 23-7, for the game.
The Raiders will be at home on Friday, September 23 to take on undefeated and regionally-ranked Buffalo at 7 p.m. at Van Doren Field. If you can’t make it to Van Doren Field you can hear the game called by Ted Rossman at www.sportsjuice.com.
