HAMILTON, N.Y. (09/17/2005)—The Colgate University men’s soccer team forced Army into a mistake in the 55th minute resulting in an own goal and what proved to be the game-winner as the Raiders upended the Black Knights 2-1 in Patriot League action. The Raiders remain unbeaten on the year with a 3-0-2 record, while Army falls to 1-5-0 overall.
This marks the first time the Raiders’ soccer squad has started a season with a five-game undefeated streak since the 1960 team put together its perfect 9-0 season. Colgate also is the only unbeaten team in the Patriot League.
The Raiders wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as junior forward Devin Deane (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) fired a perfectly-placed shot into the left corner off a pass from sophomore Eric Anton (Tacoma, Wash./Charles Wright Academy) at the 5:54 mark.
Colgate was on the doorstep again in the 32nd minute when a free kick got through to a shielded Army goalkeeper. However, John Michael Gallogly came up with the stop and Raiders headed into the locker room with a 1-0 advantage.
The pace of play by both teams picked up in the second half as both teams were looking to come away with a big league victory. Colgate started right where it left off getting into Army’s defensive third in the early going.
The Raiders were able to lock the ball in and win a throw-in deep in Army territory. The long throw by Colgate got into the box where an Army player misplayed a header by Colgate and knocked it into his own net.
The Black Knights made things interesting 13 minutes later with a penalty kick goal. Garrett Dresel knocked the 12-yard shot into the lower left corner to cut the Raiders’ lead to one. Army continued to push forward looking for the equalizer, but the Colgate defense stayed strong and came away with the 2-1 victory.
Army held a 14-8 advantage in shots, while Colgate won the corner kick battle 5-3. In goal, Doug Litvack (Levittown, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) made three stops to earn his third win of the year, while Gallogly had three stops as well in the loss.
Colgate returns to action on Sept. 21, traveling to 19th-ranked Vermont for a 7 p.m., contest. The Raiders return to Van Doren Field on Sept. 21, hosting Buffalo at 7 p.m.
