Colgate Earns 3-2 Win Against Columbia in Field Hockey

Sophomore Lauren Remkus
HAMILTON, N.Y. (9/11/05) - Sophomore Lauren Remkus (Miller Place, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the season with 3:47 left in the game to lift Colgate (3-1) to a 3-2 win against Columbia (1-3) on Sunday, Sept. 11, at Tyler’s Field.

“That was a really great way for Lauren to get her first goal of the season,” head coach Cathy Foto said. “She’s been working really hard in practice, and it paid off for her today.”

Columbia struck first, 6:14 into the game. Colgate goalkeeper Jacque DeMarco (Hudson, Ohio) went down to save a shot by Kelly Robinson. Megan Davidson picked up the rebound in the shuffle, dribbled it around DeMarco, and fired it into the open net.

Colgate was able to capitalize on two of its 16 penalty corner opportunities to gain a 2-1 lead in the first half. Senior Dana Shaner (Pottstown, Pa.) fired a shot past Columbia goalkeeper Kristina George from the top of the circle to score both times. Sophomore Natali Plesniarski (Hamilton, N.Y.), the inserter on the corner unit, and sophomore Heather Davis (Greene, N.Y.), the stopper, assisted on each goal.

In the second half, the Lions again took advantage of a rebound off a missed shot. Ramie Merrill picked up the ball after her own shot was stopped by DeMarco, and she passed it in front of the sprawled Raider keeper to Diana Day who had an open look.

Each team saw several scoring opportunities over the next 20 minutes, but neither team got a break until Remkus picked up a loose ball 15 feet from the cage and banged it home to ice the game.

DeMarco finished with six saves, while George stopped nine shots. Colgate outshot Columbia 20-8, and had a 16-1 advantage in penalty corners.

The Raiders continue their five-game homestand when they host Siena on Wednesday, Sept. 14, at Tyler’s Field at 7:00 p.m.
