HAMILTON, N.Y. (8/27/05) - Senior co-captain
Dana Shaner (Pottstown, Pa.) scored 11 seconds into overtime to lift Colgate to a 3-2 win against Appalachian State on Saturday, Aug. 27. It was the season opener for both teams.
Shaner took the ball after the passback that began the overtime session, dribbled it into the circle, and fired it into the cage past ASU goalie Kate Ryno to give the Raiders the win.
"It's the first time we've won our opening game since 2001," head coach Cathy Foto said. "I think that is a great statement about our team and what they are committed to doing on the field. Last year we lost with no time remaining on the clock, the year before we lost in OT. Today, the upperclassmen got everyone fired up during the break before the overtime started and you could feel the energy. It was a great way to start the season."
Shaner was also responsible for sending the game into overtime. Colgate was down 2-1 when ASU took a time out with 6:10 on the clock. Twenty-two seconds after the teams stepped back onto the field, Shaner scored from the top of the circle to tie the game. Appalachian State had an opportunity to finish the game in regulation when it was awarded a penalty corner with no time on the clock, but ASU could not convert, and the teams went to overtime.
The Mountaineers struck first 16:37 into the game when Erica Muschamp shook her defender and went in against goalie Jacque DeMarco (Hudson, Ohio) alone. DeMarco went down, and Muschamp lifted the ball over Colgate’s keeper and into the cage. The Raiders tied the score at 1-1 at the 26:41 mark. Shaner took the ball off a penalty corner and passed it to sophomore Natali Plesniarski (Hamilton, N.Y.) who banged it home.
In the second half, ASU retook the lead when Andrea Lee took the ball in one-on-one against DeMarco, who went down too late to stop Lee’s shot.
DeMarco finished with four saves, while Ryno posted five stops in the game. Colgate finished with 10 penalty corners to ASU’s three, and the Raiders edged the Mountaineers in shots, 10-9.
Colgate plays its first road game of the season on Saturday, Sept. 3, at Rider at 12:00 p.m.
