Bearcats Edge Colgate Volleyball

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (09/13/2005)—Colgate University freshman hitter Katrina Zawojski (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) recorded a match-high 15 kills but it was not enough for the Raider volleyball team to get past Binghamton as they fell to the Bearcats 3-0 this evening. Binghamton junior Katie Brody also added 15 kills in the contest to lead her team to the win.

All three games were decided by four or fewer points with the Bearcats winning 33-31, 30-26, 30-26.

The two squads traded points in the opening contest with neither team leading by more than three points. The Raiders jumped ahead 31-30, but Binghamton (4-6) responded with three straight points to capture the first game.

Colgate came out strong in the second game, but an 8-2 run anchored by strong blocking by the Bearcats sealed the 30-26 victory for the home squad. After trading the opening 21 points, Binghamton jumped ahead by six with a 10-5 run and never looked back on its way to the match victory.

Sophomore Sheila Giovannini (Waltham, Mass./Arlington Catholic) added eight kills for the Raiders, while Allie Nichols (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento) contributed 31 assists. Freshman libero Jackie Adlam (Marin, Calif./Marin Academy) continued her stellar defensive play with a game-high 17 digs.

Bearcats sophomore Jacki Kane had 11 kills, while junior Ashley Meffert added 27 assists. Junior blocker Megan Hoag anchored the Binghamton defense with six block assists.

Colgate (1-8) returns to the court on Sept. 16, traveling to the Cornell Tournament in Ithaca, N.Y. The Raiders will open the weekend with Butler University on Sept. 16, at 4:30 p.m. They will go up against Cornell and La Salle the following afternoon at 12:30 and 4:30 p.m., respectively.
