STORRS, CONN. (09/11/05) - The nationally-ranked University of Connecticut (4-2) kept its winless streak alive versus Colgate University (3-2) on Sunday afternoon, in the final game of the UConn Classic, when the Huskies defeated the Raiders, 2-0.
After a scoreless first half, where shots stood UConn’s favor 22-2, the Huskies finally generated the offense they were looking for with two quick goals ten minutes into the second half.
At 56:14, Elizabeth Eng took a shot that was blocked by a Colgate player, but the ball didn’t go where it was intended, and Brittany Taylor picked up the ball and shot it to the left corner pocket to put UConn on the board.
Just two minutes later, Niki Cross settled an Eng pass and sent a straight shot on goal that went past Luisa Miller (Washington, D.C./National Cathedral) in net.
Miller made eight stops in net for the Raiders, while Megan Jessee made one save in the first half for the Huskies. Jessee was replaced with Stephanie Labbe in the second, but Labbe did not face a shot.
An all-tournament team was selected after the last game of the tournament. Franny Iacuzzi and Josie Johnson both made the team for Colgate.
Colgate will travel to Wisconsin next week for the Big Toe Soccer Invitational held on the campus of the University of Wisconsin. The Raiders will take on UW-Milwaukee on Friday, September 16 at 4:30 p.m. and Brigham Young the following day at 4:30 p.m.
