HAMILTON, N.Y. – Long time Colgate University athletics administrator and coach Braden Houston has announced that he will be retiring June 30. Houston has been a member of the Colgate athletics family for 36 years.
A native of Toronto, Ontario, Houston began his career at Colgate in 1969 serving as the assistant men’s ice hockey coach and freshmen soccer coach. He later became the head coach of the Raider hockey program in 1972 and served in that role until 1975.
During the course of his career, he has served as Athletics Business Manager, Assistant Athletics Director, Associate Athletics Director, Acting Director of Athletics and Senior Associate Athletics Director.
For 28 years, Houston was the head golf coach while earning Patriot League Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2005. His teams enjoyed a successful run under his tutelage with the 1977 and 1978 teams establishing a record of 29 consecutive wins – a feat unsurpassed by any Colgate team. His overall dual record was 209-38-1.
Following his men’s ice hockey coaching stint, Houston began his administrative duties. In addition to his previously mentioned responsibilities, he oversaw and was program chairman of Colgate’s Hall of Honor for 26 years, served as NCAA Compliance Officer, and initiated and directed Colgate’s summer hockey camp, summer golf camp and the Colgate Alumni Golf Tournament.
Houston was head coach of the women’s ice hockey team for four years guiding the Raiders through their transition from club to varsity status from 1995-99.
Houston received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the Whittemore School of Business, University of New Hampshire, in 1966. At UNH, he amassed a number of hockey records and captained the Wildcats in his senior year. He still holds the record for most goals scored by a defenseman and was inducted into the UNH Athletics Hall of Fame in 1993.
Brad is an avid golfer, squash player, photographer and philatelist. In addition, Houston has hiked the 46 High Peaks in the Adirondack Mountains.
He and his wife, Chipper, are the parents of a son, Braden James (Colgate M.A. ’95), and a daughter, Nandi.
