Nordstrom Leads Colgate To A Split Of Its Doubleheader With Bucknell

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Sophomore Kelsey Nordstrom (Salina, KS) pitched a one-hit shutout in the opener as Colgate split a Patriot League doubleheader against Bucknell Tuesday at the Eaton Street Field. The Raiders won the opener 4-0, before dropping a 4-3 decision in the nightcap.

 

Colgate (13-12 overall, 7-3 Patriot League) had a five-game winning streak stopped by the Bison (6-17, 1-9) in the second game. It also snapped a 12-game winning streak over the Bison.

 

Nordstrom (7-5), who pitched her second shutout of the season, had a no-hitter until the fifth inning, when Jennifer James reached on a bunt single with one out. She struck out eight and walked two, while facing only 23 batters.

 

Colgate took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Nichole Rawson’s (Palmdale, Calif.) RBI double to right center field, scoring LaPorscha Albert (Lewisville, TX), who led off the frame with a double.

 

In the second inning, the Raiders scored once on Erin Gomez’s (Lawrenceville, NJ) RBI single that plated Natalie Rawson (Palmdale, Calif.) from third. Rawson reached on a leadoff single, moved to second on a stolen base, and advanced to third on a groundout.

 

The Raiders scored their final two runs in the fifth inning on Dorothy Donaldson’s (Lakeland, Fla.) two-run shot over the right field fence. It was Donaldson’s third home run of the season and 38th of her career.

 

Albert was 3-for-3 for the Raiders with a pair of runs scored, and Donaldson was 2-for-3.

 

In the nightcap, Bucknell jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on Megan Fink’s two-run homer over the center field fence. Colgate got one back in the bottom half of the inning on Kim Olmstead’s (Spring Hill, Fla.) RBI double.

 

The Bison scored twice more in the fifth inning for a 4-1 lead, but Colgate rallied for a pair in the sixth to cut the lead to 4-3. Colgate scored on a fielder’s choice and wild pitch.

 

Erin Hanna (Tucson, AZ) was 2-for-2 with two runs scored for the Raiders, while Olmstead was 2-for-2.  Kate Howard (Wheaton, Ill.) (6-7), who started for the Raiders, was the losing pitcher. She worked the first four innings allowing five hits, walking one and striking out two. Nordstrom pitched the final three innings.
