HAMDEN, CT. (12/5/05) – John Winchester scored a game-high 21 points to lead Quinnipiac University to a 67-59 win over Colgate Monday night in a non-conference game at Burt Kahn Court.
Quinnipiac (4-2) wins the first-ever meeting with Colgate (4-4) and snaps the Raiders' two-game winning streak. Colgate remains winless on the road in three outings.
Victor Akinyanju had 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Bobcats, while Adam Gonzalez added 10 points.
Colgate’s was paced by Alvin Reed, who tallied 14 points, to go over 900 points in his career. Kyle Roemer had 11 points for the Raiders, while Kendall Chones contributed five points and seven rebounds. Kyle Chones, who is the leading rebounder in the Patriot League, came down with 10 caroms.
It was a cold-shooting night for the Raiders, who made only 38 percent of their field goal attempts, and only 26 percent (7-of-27) from behind the arc. Colgate was four-of-12 on the charity stripe.
Quinnipiac, meanwhile, made 47 percent from the field and 45 percent from 3-point range, and held a 40-39 advantage on the boards.
The Bobcats took an early 9-2 lead, but Colgate managed to claw its way back into the contest scoring the next five points. Quinnipiac, on baskets by Dale Meinbresse and Gonzalez, moved back in front 13-7 with 12:52 remaining.
Colgate put together an eight-point run to move in front on Kyle Roemer’s 3-pointer 15-13 with 8:55 left. The Raiders were leading 27-25 just before halftime, before Winchester hit a free throw and Akinyanju tossed in a jumper to give the Bobcats a 28-27 halftime lead.
In the second half, Colgate scored the first two points to move back into a one-point lead, but Quinnipiac tallied six straight points and never looked back. The Bobcats were leading by eight points, 59-51, with just over four minutes left, when Colgate made one final run.
The Raiders scored five straight points on Jon Foss’ basket and a 3-pointer by Reed to cut the deficit to three points. After a Bobcat turnover, Colgate’s Todd Checovich had a shot blocked which Colgate thought should have been goaltending. Instead, Quinnipiac grabbed the rebound, and Craig Benson hit a 3-pointer to put the Bobcats up by six points.
Akinyanju added a basket and Winchester made a free throw to put QU ahead by a game-high nine points to seal the victory.
