Tigers Too Much For Raiders

PRINCETON, N.J. (12/3/05) - The No. 6/7 Princeton Tigers came out firing scoring four first-period goals on Colgate University, including a hat trick by freshman Annie Greeenwood to lead the Tigers to a 6-2 victory over the Raiders on Dec. 2 at Baker Rink.

The Raiders are now 7-5-3 overall and 4-1-1 in the ECAC Hockey League, while Princeton improves to 7-3-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the conference.

With a Raider in the box on a body checking infraction, the Tigers set up in power-play formation. Marykate Oakley positioned at the top of the point, sent a pass to Laura Watt on the left side of the net, she moved the puck to Greenwood in front of the ice that snuck it past Brook Wheeler a Colgate defender at 2:13.

Christina Foster added the second Princeton goal at 7:27. Princeton’s Chrissie Norwich had a slap shot near the Raider bench. With two forwards waiting in front of net, Foster was able to capitalize and batted it in past Wheeler.

Greenwood tallied her second goal of the period, when she came charging towards the goal after the puck was untied in the corners and sent free by Kim Pearce at 13:01.

Kate Hession ripped a shot from blue line that was deflected to the right side of the net to Greenwood. Greenwood quickly picked up the puck and sent it over the glove of Wheeler at 15:12.

After being outshot 10-5 in the first period, Colgate battled back in the second with eight shots to Princeton’s nine and was able to light up the scoreboard in its favor with a goal from freshman Clancy Todd (Thorold, Ont.). Elin Brown (Calgary, Alta.) picked up a Tara French (Truro, N.S.) pass on the left side of the net and sent it up to the doorstep where Todd was able sent a shot top shelf on Princeton’s Roxanne Gaudiel at 13:27.

Just 27 seconds into the third period, Princeton added another goal to increase its lead 5-1. Brittney Salmon grabbed a Dina McCumber puck and sent to over the blocker of Wheeler.

The Raiders quickly answered back at 1:09 when senior Becky Irvine (Lakeview, N.S.) found room between Gaudiel and the left-side post with a shot from the left side of the net, taken at the rim of the circle.

Greeenwood added her fourth of the game, a power-play goal, when she flipped the puck high over Wheeler to the back of the net at 13:34. Hesion and Norwich were credited with the assists as the Tigers moved the game to 6-2.

Wheeler made 22 saves for Colgate, while Gaudiel stopped 22 for Princeton. Colgate will take a month-long break for finals and the holiday season. The Raiders return on Jan. 4 when they make the trip to Durham, N.H., to take on the Wildcats in a midweek game at 7 p.m.
