Women's Basketball Falls to Princeton, 79-61

PRINCETON, N.J.—Colgate University sophomore guard Melanie Cargle (Trotwood, Ohio) scored a career-high 18 points and posted a team-best four assists, but it was not enough as Princeton University grabbed a 79-61 non-conference victory in women’s basketball action this evening. Casey Lockwood led the way for the Tigers with a game-high 18 points.

Colgate jumped out to a 14-5 lead in the opening four minutes and carried that to a 38-31 halftime lead. Freshman guard Gretchen Polinski (Mansfield, Ohio) knocked down a pair of three-pointers and senior guard Megan Ballard (Atlanta, Ga.) added a third as the Raiders hit six of their first eight shots to start the game.

Polinski finished with 13 points, four rebounds, and two blocks, while Ballard turned in a solid all-around performance with 13 points, seven steals, and a team-high five rebounds.

The Raiders shot 45.5 percent (15-of-33) from the field in the opening 20 minutes, while Princeton knocked down 40.6 percent (13-of-32) of their shots from the floor.

Polinski opened the second frame with a layup to put Colgate ahead 40-31, but the Tigers roared back with a 14-4 run to take their first lead of the game 45-44 at the 14:25 mark. The Raiders regained the lead two more times before Princeton put together a 13-2 run to go up 61-51 at the 7:38 mark.

The Raiders shot 41.7 percent for the game (25-of-60), including just 37 percent (10-of-27) in the second half, while Princeton finished the game 28-of-63 from the floor for 44.4 percent.

Senior Becky Brown posted a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while sophomore Meagan Cowher had 12 points and seven rebounds.

The Raiders debut on Cotterell Court on Dec. 7, hosting University of New Hampshire at 7 p.m.
