EL PASO, TX (12/28/05) – Senior guard Alvin Reed tallied a team-high 13 points to lead Colgate to a 64-53 win over Mississippi Valley State in the consolation game of the 45th State Farm Sun Bowl Tournament Wednesday night at the Don Haskins Center.
Colgate (6-7) snaps a two-game losing streak, while the Delta Devils remain winless in nine outings. This was the first meeting ever between these two teams.
Dan Gentile added nine points and a career-high seven rebounds for the Raiders, while Marc Daniels had eight points and a career-high eight rebounds. Colgate’s Kyle Roemer tallied nine points and Jon Simon had eight.
Mississippi Valley was paced by Mike Thomas with 14 points, while Jeffrey Price had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Jesse Taylor was in double figures for the losers with 10 points.
Colgate shot 43 percent from the field making 20-of-47 shots, and was 4-of-14 from 3-point range. They made 20-of-24 from the charity stripe including 10-of-11 in the final minute.
The Delta Devils shot only 27 from the field making 16-of-60 attempts, and were 15-of-19 from the foul line. Colgate had a 41-35 advantage in the rebounding department.
Mississippi Valley jumped out to a 5-0 lead, before Colgate rattled off 10 straight points behind baskets by Jon Foss, Todd Checovich and a pair of 3-pointers by Gentile. The Delta Devils came back to tie the contest 12-12, but the Raiders took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Reed. Colgate led at halftime, 27-22.
In the second half, Colgate held a one-point lead, 32-31, with 12:11 remaining, before ripping off a 13-3 run to open an 11-point advantage with 6:27 left. The Raiders increased their lead to 15 points with under four minutes remaining. The closest Mississippi Valley came after that was eight points with 59 seconds left.
The Raiders will play their final non-conference game of the season on Monday, Jan. 2 at Stony Brook, before opening Patriot League play.
