CAMBRIDGE, MA. (12/20/05) – Freshman Drew Housman scored a career-high 21 points, and Matt Stehle added 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead Harvard to a 68-59 win over Colgate Tuesday night at Lavietes Pavilion.
Harvard (8-3) wins its third straight game and for just the sixth time in 18 outings against the Raiders (5-6). Colgate had won three straight on Harvard’s home floor.
Also in double figures for Harvard was Jim Goffredo with 13 points. Colgate was led by Alvin Reed with 14 points and Jon Simon with 10 points.
The key statistics in the contest favored Harvard, which was 30-of-39 from the foul line, and out-rebounded the Raiders, 43-24.
After trailing by five points at halftime, Colgate fell behind by eight points 35-27 in the second half before staging a rally. The Raiders went on a 12-4 run to tie the contest at 39-39 with 14:04 remaining. Reed had five points in the run, and Kyle Roemer and Kyle Chones hit back-to-back 3-pointers to tie the game.
Harvard scored the next five points, but Colgate answered with seven straight points to take its first lead since the opening basket of the game. Jon Foss and Simon Knight made layups, and the Raiders took the lead 46-44 on Simon’s 3-pointer with 9:27 left.
The Raiders increased their lead to six points, 53-47, with 6:51 left, but didn’t score again until there was 48 seconds left, as Harvard close with a 21-6 run. The Crimson scored 16 of their final 21 points from the foul line.
During the 6:03 scoring drought by the Raiders, they saw both Kyle Chones and Reed fouled out of the contest.
After Roemer scored the first basket of the contest, Harvard responded with eight straight points to take an 8-2 lead with 16:18 left. The Crimson were able to increase their advantage to 11 points on a couple of occasions enjoying a 24-13 advantage with 7:48 remaining in the opening half. Colgate’s offense finally came alive with the Raiders managing to cut the halftime deficit to five points, 29-24. Reed led the charge back with five points over the last six minutes despite being saddled with two fouls.
Colgate returns to action on Dec. 27 in the first round of the State Farm Sun Bowl Tournament against Georgetown University in El Paso, Texas.
