Binghamton hands Colgate Women's Basketball 82-61 loss

Seniors Megan Ballard and Meghan Curtin led the way with 14 points apiece.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y.—Binghamton University sophomore Laine Kurpniece scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Bearcats to an 82-61 victory over Colgate University in women’s basketball at the Events Center. The Raiders fall to 1-8 overall, while Binghamton improves to 6-3 on the year.

The Bearcats scored the game’s first six points and never looked back, using runs to take a 42-28 lead into the locker room. Senior forward Jen Haubrich was the spark for the Binghamton offense, finishing the first half with 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting.

The Raiders shot 35.3 percent from the floor in the opening half, but were just 1-of-6 from long range. Sophomore guard Melanie Cargle (Trotwood, Ohio) led Colgate with seven points at the break. Binghamton finished the first session shooting 45.5 percent from the field, getting 13 and 11 points from Jen Haubrich and Kurpniece, respectively. Both teams had seven turnovers in the opening stanza.

Binghamton continued to build on its lead in the second half, starting the session with a 10-4 run to make it a 20-point game at 52-32. The Raiders cut the lead to 16, but the Bearcats wouldn’t let them get any closer than that.

Senior guards Megan Ballard (Atlanta, Ga.) and Meghan Curtin (Bronx, N.Y.) led the Raiders with 14 points apiece, while Cargle finished with nine. Ballard continued her record-breaking pace with a game-high five steals, pushing her career total to 211. Freshman Gretchen Polinski led the way on the boards with seven caroms.

Colgate shot 40.3 percent for the game and forced the Bearcats into 18 turnovers.

Haubrich finished with 18 points for Binghamton, while Jen Blues contributed 11 points. Kurpniece had seven boards to lead the Bearcats. Binghamton shot 56.1 percent from the floor, including 42.9 percent from behind the arc.

The Raiders take eight days off before returning to action on Dec. 28, when Niagara visits Cotterell Court for a 7 p.m., tipoff.
