Syracuse Pulls Away In The Second Half To Win 58-35 In Men's Basketball

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (12/10/05) – Gerry McNamara scored 14 points, including three 3-pointers in the second half, and Demetris Nichols added 13 points to lead Syracuse to a 58-35 win over Colgate Saturday night at the Carrier Dome.
 
Syracuse (7-2) wins its 40th straight game over the Raiders (4-5) to lead the overall series of 113-45. Colgate’s 33 points was its lowest output since the Raiders lost in the second game of the 1988-89 season to Princeton, 43-33.
 
Colgate was led by Alvin Reed with 11 points, while Kyle Chones had eight points and Todd Checovich tallied seven.
 
Colgate had an early five-point lead over the Orange, 9-4, before Syracuse came back to tie the contest on McNamara’s 3-pointer with 11:33 remaining. After Kyle Chones put the Raiders back in front 12-9 with his second 3-pointer, the Orange scored 10 straight points to take control with 5:49 left in the first half.
 
Colgate finished the first half outscoring Syracuse 6-3 to trail 22-18 at intermission.
In the second half, Reed cut the lead to within two points with the opening basket, before Syracuse’s Eric Devendorf scored six straight points.
 
With Syracuse leading 30-22, the Orange put the game away with 19 straight points, led by Demetris Nichols with five points, and McNamara with six points.
 
Kyle Chones and Marc Daniels led Colgate with seven rebounds apiece to help the Raiders finish even with the Orange on the boards, 30-30.
 
Colgate shot only 29 percent from the field, while the Orange made 48 percent. The Raiders didn’t shoot a foul shot until there was 32 seconds left in the contest (2-of-2), while Syracuse was 8-of-14 from the charity stripe.
 
The Raiders will break for final exams before playing their next game on Dec. 17 at home against Hobart.
