CALGARY, Alta. (11/9/05) - Former Colgate University hockey player Cory Murphy ‘01 played for Team Canada in the opening game of the Deutschland Cup on Tuesday, Nov. 8. Murphy was part of a 21-player roster that defeated Switzerland 2-1 in overtime in the opening game of the tournament, which was held in Zurich. Canada’s roster was mainly made up of Canadians playing in Switzerland.
Murphy is currently playing professional hockey for Fribourg of the Swiss League. He finished his Colgate career third all-time among Raider defensemen with 111 points on 28 goals and 83 assists. Murphy set the Colgate record for career games played with 138, which was later broken by Rob Brown with 143 and Adam Mitchell with 152.
The players on the roster for last night’s Deutschland Cup game are being evaluated for their possible participation in the Spengler Cup, which takes place in Davos, Switzerland, Dec. 24-31. Canada’s Spengler Cup roster is annually composed mainly of players playing in Switzerland as the Swiss League is the only European league that breaks during the Dec. 24-31 time period. In December, Canada may name some AHL players to round out its Spengler Cup roster.
The Deutschland Cup continues through Nov. 13 in Mannheim and Hanover, Germany. Canada finished third at the 2004 event and fourth at the 2003 event. Canada last took home the Deutschland Cup in 2002 after going undefeated with a 4-0-0 record.
