Dekanich, Colgate Shut Out Brown 5-0 in ECACHL Opener

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (11/4/05) - Colgate sophomore goaltender Mark Dekanich (North Vancouver, B.C.) made 26 saves to earn his first career shutout and lead the Raiders (4-1-1) to a 5-0 win against Brown (0-1-0) in their first ECAC Hockey League game of the season.

Colgate gained a 1-0 lead 11:35 into the first period. The Raiders were cycling the puck in the zone, and sophomore Jesse Winchester (Long Sault, Ont.) had it in the right faceoff circle. He passed it to classmate Tyler Burton (Langley, B.C.) waiting to the left of the goal. His initial shot was saved by Brown goalie Adam D’Alba, but senior captain Jon Smyth (Markham, Ont.) picked up the rebound right on the doorstep and slipped it past D’Alba on his glove side.

It took just 2:23 of the second period for Colgate to gain a two-goal cushion. Freshman Nick St. Pierre (St. Etienne, Que.) took a pass from sophomore Ben Camper (Rocky River, Ohio), right point to left, and he fired on goal. Burton tipped the puck into the net with his skate to get credit for his fourth goal of the season, and his second power-play score.

With 13:04 left in the middle session, Colgate earned a 5-on-3 power-play opportunity and once again took advantage of it. Junior Mike Campaner (Thunder Bay, Ont.) held the puck behind Brown’s net and to the right. He passed it to junior Marc Fulton (Vancouver, B.C.) in the left faceoff circle, and he fired a quick pass to senior Kyle Wilson (London, Ont.), who was waiting at the right side of the goalmouth. D’Alba, who was facing Fulton, was caught off guard, and Wilson had an open net to score into just 19 seconds into the power play.

The Raiders continued with a five-on-four advantage. Just 35 seconds later, Camper got the puck to Smyth, who placed a shot on D’Alba. The rebound came to Winchester, who banged it home for his fourth goal of the season.

Colgate made it 5-0 with 5:59 left in the third period. Smyth dropped the puck off for sophomore Matt Torti (Oxford, Mass.) at the right point. He shot it toward the goal, where it was picked up on the doorstep by Burton. Burton’s shot ricocheted off D’Alba to Winchester, who was waiting to the left of the net, and scored into the open side.

Colgate completes the weekend series at Yale on Saturday, Nov. 5, starting at 7:00 p.m. The Bulldogs lost to Cornell, 4-2, in their season-opener Friday night.
