HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/29/06) – Junior guard Jon Simon hit a short jumper with less than a second left to lift Colgate (3-3) to a thrilling 65-64 double overtime victory over the Big Green of Dartmouth (1-2) Tuesday night at Cotterell Court.

Simon, who scored half of his 16 points in overtime, was Colgate’s leading scorer, while Kyle Chones, Kendall Chones and Alvin Reed added 11 apiece.

Dartmouth’s leading scorer was Leon Pattman with a game-high 20 points, while Mike Lang had 14.

Dartmouth sent the contest into overtime when Chuck Flynn scored on a lay up with nine-tenths of a second left in regulation for a 46-46 tie.

The Big Green quickly jumped in front 49-46 on Lang’s 3-pointer, but Colgate scored the next five points on Dan Gentile’s 3-pointer and Kyle Roemer’s lay up. The Big Green came back with their own five-point run on Paul Bode’s basket and Mike Giovacchini’s 3-pointer to lead 54-51 with 1:41 left. Roemer tied the contest with 17.8 seconds left with a long distance 3-pointer to force the second overtime.

Again the Big Green took the early lead 59-54 on Pattman’s jumper and Lang’s fourth 3-pointer of the game. After Colgate cut the deficit to 59-57, Dartmouth appeared to have the game under control when Pattman gave his team a four-point lead with 48 seconds left.

Simon nailed two more free throws with 36 seconds left to bring the Raiders to within one point, 62-61. Dartmouth’s Bode missed the front end of a one-and-one with 34 seconds remaining, and Roemer hauled down the rebound. He came down the court to hit a jumper with 18 seconds left to put Colgate ahead 63-62, but Dartmouth’s Pattman scored to put the Big Green back in front with six seconds left, setting the stage for Simon’s game-winning basket just before the final buzzer.

Colgate led at halftime 24-21 behind 10 points by Reed. Both teams shot poorly in the contest with Colgate hitting 37 percent from the field and 65 percent from the free throw line, while Dartmouth made 38 percent from the field.
