Burton Nets First Career Hat Trick in 5-0 Shutout of Union

HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/19/05) - Sophomore center Tyler Burton (Langley, B.C.) scored his first career hat trick and classmate Mark Dekanich (North Vancouver, B.C.) made 17 saves as the No. 17 Colgate hockey team earned a 5-0 shutout against Union on Friday, Nov. 19, at Starr Rink.

The first goal of Burton’s natural hat trick resulted from a scramble in front of the net during a Colgate power play, just as a 5-on-3 opportunity expired. The rebound off a shot by sophomore Ben Camper (Rocky River, Ohio) came to Burton in front of the net, and he shoveled it past Union goalie Kris Mayotte 12:56 into the first.

Colgate sophomore Alex Greig (Pickering, Ont.) and senior captain Jon Smyth (Markham, Ont.) battled with two Union players to gain control of the puck at the left point late in the first. Smyth came up with the puck, and he found Burton high in the slot. Burton’s shot beat Mayotte stick-side.

Burton’s third goal came 9:15 into the second period. Greig threw the puck at the net from the high slot, and Burton found a way to nudge it past Mayotte from the crease.

Senior Ryan Smyth (Clarence Creek, Ont.) got in on the scoring action with just under six minutes to play in the second period. Freshman Jason Fredricks (Eagle River, Wis.) put the puck on net as a Union penalty expired. Junior Mark Fulton (Vancouver, B.C.) tried to jam it home, and Mayotte made the stop, but the puck squirted loose to Smyth in front, and hit wristed it five-hole.

With less than three minutes to play in the third period, sophomore Jesse Winchester (Long Sault, Ont.) scored his eighth goal of the season on a Colgate power play opportunity. Jon Smyth cycled the puck to Burton behind the net, who passed it to Winchester at the side of the net. Winchester tipped it in stick-side.

Colgate outshot Union 30-17, and finished the game 2-for-9 on the power play. The Raiders killed off all five Dutchmen power-play opportunities, and the penalty kill allowed just three shots. Union was whistled for 13 penalties totaling 58 minutes, including four 10-minute majors. Colgate finished with seven penalties for 30 minutes, including two 10-minute penalties on freshman Peter Bogdanich (Burnaby, B.C.).

The Raiders host Western Michigan in a two-game series Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 25-26, at Starr Rink. Both games begin at 7:00 p.m.
