IOWA CITY, IA (11/15/05) – The 20th ranked Iowa Hawkeyes (2-0) rolled to a 73-51 victory over Colgate (1-1) in the final of the Iowa City Regional of the Guardians Classic Tuesday night at the Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The Hawkeyes advance to play the University of Kentucky in the semifinal round of the Guardians Classic in Kansas City on Nov. 21.
Greg Brunner led four Iowa players in double figures with 16 points, followed by Adam Haluska with 14 points, Jeff Horner 13 and Erek Hansen with 11.
Iowa held a 4-3 lead before scoring the next eight points to open a nine-point advantage with 15:41 remaining with Erek Hansen scoring five points. The Hawkeyes continued to remain in control outscoring the Raiders 11-3 for a 17-point lead, 23-6, with 10:53 left.
Over the next eight minutes, Colgate finally got its scoring untracked as they actually outscored Iowa 12-11 to trail 34-18. The Hawkeyes biggest lead came at halftime, 42-23.
In the second half, Colgate opened with a 20-7 run to cut the Iowa lead to six points, 49-43, with 13:34 left. Kendall Chones and Reed had nine points apiece in the run, while Roemer added two. Iowa answered the Colgate challenge outscoring the Raiders 19-2 to take control of the contest 68-45.
Colgate will open its home season on Friday night, when the Raiders entertain Florida Atlantic University at Cotterell Court. Tip-off is 8 p.m. The game will feature the return of former Notre Dame and North Carolina coach Matt Doherty to the collegiate coaching ranks.
