IOWA CITY, IA (11/14/05) – Kyle Roemer and Kendall Chones scored 13 points apiece to lead Colgate (1-0) to a 55-42 first round win over Utah Valley State (0-1) in the opening round of the Iowa City Regional of the Guardians Classic at Iowa’s Carver-Hawkeye Arena Monday night.
Colgate advances to the second round of the Iowa City Regional on Tuesday, where it will play 20th ranked Iowa, which defeated Maryland-Eastern Shore in the other first round game. The winner of the Iowa City Regional advances to the semifinal round against the winner of the Lexington (KY) Regional on Nov. 21 in Kansas City.
Other leading scorers for the Raiders, who won their first opener since the 2001-02 season, were Jon Foss with 10 points, and Jon Simon and Alvin Reed with six each.
Utah Valley State was led by senior Pierre Thomas with a career-high 17 points.
Colgate jumped out to a 9-0 lead against the Wolverines during the first four minutes, behind Roemer’s 3-pointer and baskets by Simon, Kendall Chones and Marc Daniels.
Utah Valley finally scored on a basket by Chris Lang with 15:18 remaining. Over the next nine minutes, the Raiders were able to maintain their nine-point advantage.
Ahead 19-12, Colgate scored six straight points for a 25-12 lead on baskets by Foss, Kyle Chones and a pair of free throws by Simon. The biggest advantage of the first half came at halftime, 28-14, for the Raiders.
In the second half, Colgate quickly jumped out to a 17-point lead 35-18, before Utah Valley closed to within 10, 39-29. The Raiders would continue to lead by double digits the remainder of the contest.
Daniels led Colgate in rebounding with five, while Roemer, Kyle Chones and Foss had four apiece. The Raiders outshot Utah Valley State from the field making 51 percent of their attempts, while the taller Wolverines made only 35 percent.
