HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/11/05)—Colgate University senior Allison Paiano (Orleans, Ontario) tallied a career-high six points from two goals and four assists to lead the women’s ice hockey team to a 9-0 non-conference victory over Robert Morris on Nov. 11, at Starr Rink. The Raiders improve to 4-3-2 overall with the win, while the Colonials drop to 1-7-0 in their inaugural season.
Colgate came out of the gates hard, peppering Robert Morris goalie Quinn Caggiula with shots 10 shots before junior Carly McNaughton (Lethbridge, Alta.) knocked home the puck for a 1-0 lead. McNaughton took a centering pass from freshman defenseman Elin Brown (Calgary, Alta.) and wristed the puck past Caggiula into the right corner.
The Raiders continued to pour on the offense, when less than three minutes later Paiano notched her first score of the game 44 seconds into Colgate’s first power-play opportunity. Senior Becky Irvine (Lakeview, N.S.) and junior Tara French (Truro, N.S.) provided the assists for the Raiders.
Brown made it a 3-0 game with 35 seconds left in the period, tipping in a rebound off of French’s shot from the blueline to send the Raiders into the first intermission up 3-0. Colgate finished the period 2-of-4 on the power play.
The scoring continued just 3:41 into the second stanza, when freshman Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) picked up a loose puck on the right face-off circle and lifted the puck over the backstop’s left shoulder. Hunt added a power-play tally at the 13:43 mark of the second period, finishing the game with five points on two goals and three assists.
Paiano and Irvine notched goals between Hunts’ pair to head into the third session up 7-0. Irvine also posted five points on the night.
The Raiders added two more scores in the third period from Brown and Irvine to secure the 9-0 victory.
Colgate outshot the Colonials 53-11 for the game and went 3-of-7 on the power-play. Robert Morris could not connect on any of its six power-play opportunities, getting just three shots off during those power-play chances.
Freshman Elana Hamashuk (Nepean, Ont.) got the nod for the Raiders in goal, making five saves in two periods to earn her first collegiate win. Senior Melanie Barclay (Trowbridge, Ont.) stopped six shots in the final 20 minutes to earn the Raiders’ second shutout of the year.
Caggiula had 44 saves for the Colonials, dropping to 1-7-0 on the year. Colgate returns to action on Nov. 13, hosting Brock University in an exhibition game at 2 p.m. The Raiders next regular season contest is on Nov. 19, against Niagara at 7:30 p.m., at Starr Rink.
