Raider Women’s Swimming Team Defeats Army, 168-131

HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/29/05) - Freshman Lisa Marchi (Scottsdale, Ariz.) won three individual events and anchored the 200 free relay that broke the Colgate freshman record as the Raider women’s swimming team defeated Army, 168-131, on Saturday, Oct. 29, at Lineberry Natatorium.

Marchi picked up her first win of the meet in the 1000 free. Her time of 10:40.44 ranks seventh on the all-time Colgate performance chart. She followed that up with a win in the 100 back, establishing a new freshman record and the third-fastest time in Raider history, 59.13. Marchi’s third win was in the 500 free. Her time of 5:08.65 beat the runner-up by nearly 11 seconds, and ranks seventh on Colgate’s career performance list and sixth on the top-10 performers list. Marchi topped off the afternoon by swimming the final leg of the 200 free relay that set the freshman record with the third-fastest time in school history, 1:38.19. The relay’s time was faster than any time in the Patriot League last season prior to the championship meet.

“Freshman records will come and go, I guess,” head coach Stephen Jungbluth said. “Lisa erased the record that classmate Beverly Walker set last week in the 100 back. With her three individual wins, she gave the team exactly what it needed from her this week.”

The Raiders started the meet with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay. Sophomores Colby Seamans (Naperville, Ill.) and Magdalena Mango (New York, N.Y.), senior Chrissy Zaika (Syracuse, N.Y.) and freshman Beverly Walker (Marietta, Ga.) turned in a time of 1:51.53, which was just 0.22 seconds off the winning time and ranks 10th in Colgate history.

Junior Keriann Fitzsimons (Red Hook, N.Y.) finished the 200 free in 1:58.36, which was less than three seconds off her personal best. She came in third, 1.22 seconds behind the winner.

“Fitzsimons had a great 200 freestyle,” Jungbluth said. “It’s so good to see Keriann swim well because she is someone whose training program continues throughout the entire calendar year. She has set herself up and is starting to see the benefits already.

Freshman Emily Murphy (Syracuse, N.Y.) won the 100 breast in the third-fastest time in Raider history, 1:06.12. She finished second in the 50 free 0.04 seconds behind school record-holder Zaika, who won the event in 24.60. Murphy also took top honors in the 200 breast, touching the pad in 2:26.48. She swam the third leg of the freshman record-setting 200 free relay with a team-best split of 23.96.

Mango finished third in the 100 breast with a time of 1:09.85, which was just two seconds off her career best, as she scored some much-needed team points.

Walker came in second in the 200 fly, posting a time of 2:12.61 that was just 0.36 off the winning pace and ranks ninth on Colgate’s top-10 performers list. She went on to win the 200 backstroke in 2:10.00 and swim the second leg of the 200 free relay. Classmate Ashley Bottger (Weston, Conn.) swam the lead-off portion of the relay.

Army senior Chelsea Haviland won the one-meter diving event and set a Lineberry record with a score of 292.73. Colgate senior Emily McAuliff (Springfield, Ill.) finished second with 252 points, and classmate Jen Rodgers (Glenmont, N.Y.) was third with a career-best score of 249.23. Junior Gretchen Swarr (Southport, Conn.) came in fourth with 203.40 points.

In the three-meter event, Haviland won with a score of 3:04.88, which was less than three points off the Lineberry record. McAuliff posted 267.83 points to come in second, while Rodgers had a career-high 250.35 points and Swarr garnered 199.58 points to take fourth.

In the penultimate event, Seamans finished second in the 400 IM with a personal-best time of 4:43.94, which was about seven seconds faster than her previous best. She also came within 0.07 of her career best time in the 200 free with a fourth-place finish in 1:58.75.

Colby Seamans’ performance in the 400 IM was the swim of the meet,” Jungbluth said. “Her discipline in the off-season with respect to her training and competing has made all the difference in the world this year. She has clearly matured as a competitor since her freshman season, and she is choosing to put herself in the top training group on our team. I am happy for Colby that her hard work from last April to August is already paying off in the meets.”

The Raiders host their third-straight home meet when they take on Lehigh and Navy in double-dual action on Saturday, Nov. 5, starting at 2:00 p.m.
