HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/29/05) - Sophomore goaltender Justin Kowalkoski (Young America, Minn.) made 19 saves on 20 shots to lead Colgate to a 3-1 win against Bentley in his first career start on Saturday, Oct. 29, at Starr Rink. With the win, Colgate improves to 3-1-1 overall this season, while Bentley falls to 2-4-0.
Senior captain Jon Smyth (Markham, Ont.) opened the scoring 1:47 into the first period. Junior Mike Campaner (Thunder Bay, Ont.) and sophomore Tyler Burton (Langley, B.C.) broke out of the zone, with Burton on the left side. Burton put the puck on the tape of Smyth’s stick, and he skated it into the zone from the red line. Smyth’s shot came from the top of the left faceoff circle and beat Bentley freshman goalie Jason Kearney glove-side, just under the crossbar.
Burton scored his third goal of the season with just under seven minutes left in the opening period. Campaner and sophomore Jesse Winchester (Long Sault, Ont.) took the puck out with Burton on the right-wing boards. Winchester’s heads-up pass gave Burton a breakaway, and he wristed a shot under Kearney’s blocker.
Bentley got on the board 4:31 into the second. Jeff Gumaer stole the puck from a Colgate defenseman, and dropped a pass from the corner to Anthony Canzoneri. Canzoneri immediately passed to Prewitt who was alone in front of the goal, and he buried the puck low on Kowalkoski’s glove side from the top of the crease.
Senior defenseman Eric Main (Atikokan, Ont.) netted his first goal of the season with 1:40 left in the second period to put the Raiders up 3-1. Campaner blocked a shot from the point, picked up the puck along the boards, and passed to senior Kyle Wilson (London, Ont.) who was streaking down the ice along the right boards. Main joined the play from the penalty box to create a 2-on-1 opportunity for the Raiders. Wilson slipped the puck to Main, and he got just enough of his stick on it to score five-hole on Kearney.
Colgate outshot Bentley 31-20 on the night. Kearney finished with 28 saves, including stopping 13 of 14 Raider shots in the second period. Colgate dominated in the faceoff circle, winning 36 of 56 draws. Wilson led the way, taking the puck on 14 of his 18 faceoff attempts.
Colgate opens its ECAC Hockey League schedule on Friday, Nov. 4, at Brown. Game time is 7:00 p.m. The Raiders conclude the first conference road trip of the season at Yale on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
