HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/28/05) - The Colgate (1-2-2) University women’s hockey team defeated Wayne State (0-5-2) 3-2 on Friday night at Starr Rink, in the Raiders’ first victory of the 2005-06 campaign.

Junior defender Tara French (Truro, N.S.) tallied the game-winning goal for the Raiders when she picked up a Becky Irvine (Lakeview, N.S.) pass at the top of the right face-off circle, just after the draw was taken. French sent a ripper that went over Wayne State’s Valery Turcotte's right shoulder and into the back of the net at 13:26 of the third period.

After a scoreless first period, Wayne State’s Sam Poyton made it 1-0 just 1:42 into the second stanza when she picked up a Jessica Snelgrove pass in the slot and sent it past Colgate’s Brook Wheeler (Brussels, Ont.) glove side. The goal came just two seconds after a Colgate player returned to the ice from the penalty box after a body checking call.

Colgate was able to even the scoring before the close of the second when Allison Paiano (Orleans, Ont.) tipped in a Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) shot at 18:37 when she sent a slow rolling shot towards Turcotte. Turcotte believed she had the puck in her glove but as she stood in front of the net, the puck slowly trickled over the goal line. Freshman Clancy Todd (Thorold, Ont.) was credited with an assist for her first collegiate point.

At 2:31 of the third period, Wayne State’s Danielle Wilson found Lindsay DiPietro in a scrum in front of the net.  DiPietro picked up the puck and circled out to find space and sent a shot a high shot that beat Wheeler stick side at 2:31.

Colgate’s Paiano answered back with her second tally of the game at 5:16, when she sent a backhander past Turcotte. Paiano was just a little early for Hunt’s pass but with excellent stick handling was able to maneuver to connect with the puck and evened the scoring at 2-2. Irvine was credited with the second assist.

After a timeout was called with 1:31 remaining, Wayne State pulled Turcotte for the extra attacker but the Colgate defense went the distance and blocked all four Warrior shots.

Shots in the contest were even at 22, with Wheeler making 20 saves in her first win of the season. Turcotte turned away 19 for Wayne State. The Warriors were 0-for-4 on the power play, while the Raiders were 0-for-2.

Colgate which is now 7-5 against Wayne State will face off with the Warriors again tomorrow at 2 p.m., at Starr Rink to conclude the two-game series.
