WEST POINT, N.Y. (10/28/2005)—Colgate University freshman Jackie Adlam (Marin, Calif./Marin Academy) had a match-high 19 digs against Army this evening to surpass Natalie Rawson ’05 as Colgate’s single-season record holder for digs, but it was not enough as the Raider volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to a talented Black Knights’ squad at Gillis Field House. Rookie Briana Stremick had a match-best 16 kills and posted a .364 hitting percentage to lead Army to the important Patriot League win.
Adlam has recorded 451 digs through 23 matches this season, six more than Rawson boasted in all of 2004. The rookie libero has recorded at least 10 digs in all but two matches and has posted 30 or more four times. Her 24 digs against Princeton on Sept. 10 also tied Rawson’s record for digs in a three-game match.
Army controlled the match from the beginning, sweeping Colgate in three games, 30-14, 30-10, 30-21 to improve to 18-3 overall and 9-1 in the Patriot League, while the Raiders fall to 5-18 and 4-6 in conference play.
The Black Knights opened the match with seven straight points behind the serving of senior Abby Casciato and never looked back. Colgate pulled to within six points at 10-4, but could not get any closer, losing 30-14.
After a tough second game, Colgate traded points with Army in the third, tying the score at 11 apiece. The Black Knights broke the deadlock with eight of the next 11 points to seal the 3-0 match victory.
Freshman Katrina Zawojski (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) led the Raider offense with nine kills, while senior Allie Nichols (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento) notched a double-double with 14 assists and 12 digs. She also finished second on the team in kills with five.
Junior Marybeth Maziarz (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) and sophomore Erin Kanetzke (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) both totaled five block assists to lead the defensive effort at the net.
Freshman Jamie Clark added 10 kills for the Black Knights and Casciato handled the setting duties totaling a match-high 30 assists. Casicato also recorded a team-high 14 digs, while freshman Elizabeth Lazzari and senior Mandy Kimbrell had 12 apiece. As a team the Black Knights finished with a .260 hitting percentage, including hitting an impressive .371 in the second game.
Colgate will travel to Holy Cross for an important Patriot League contest tomorrow, Oct. 29, at 4 p.m. The Crusaders fell to Bucknell this evening 3-0.
