LEWISBURG, Pa. (10/15/2005)—Colgate University freshman Katrina Zawojski (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) registered a match-high 19 kills, but it wasn’t enough as three Bucknell University players registered 16 kills apiece to upend the Raiders, 3-1, in a Patriot League volleyball match this evening. Juniors Jennie Smith, Kristen Sydlowski, and sophomore Jenna Henderson combined for 48 kills to lead the Bison to a 30-25, 29-31, 30-23, 30-23 victory over the visiting Raiders.

Zawojski added 11 digs to her 19 kills to post her 10th double-double of the year. Freshman Christy Gault (Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) contributed 10 kills for the Raiders, while senior Allie Nichols (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento) just missed her fourth career triple-double with 42 assists, 14 digs, and eight kills.

Defensively, it was freshman Jackie Adlam (Marin, Calif./Marin Academy) and sophomore Erin Kanetzke (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) leading the charge for Colgate. Adlam maintained her record-breaking pace with a match-high 28 digs, while Kanetzke was solid on the front line defense with a career-high nine total blocks.

The Raiders stayed with the Bison through the first half of the match’s opening game, but couldn’t hang on down the stretch. Tied at 15, Bucknell pulled away with a 7-2 run and never looked back for the 30-25 victory.

The second game was a different story for Colgate, posting a .263 hitting percentage with 20 kills on 57 attacks. The Raiders jumped out to an 8-5 lead before the Bison pulled ahead 14-13. Colgate scored the game’s next two points on kills from Nichols and Zawojski and never let the Bucknell regain a lead.

Bucknell bounced back from a four-point deficit to tie the game at 29, but a Zawojski kill and attack error by the Bison gave the Raiders the 31-29 victory to tie the match at one.

The third and fourth games proved to be very similar to the first as Colgate hung with the Bison throughout much of the match. However, strong runs by Bucknell late in the games dashed the Raiders’ chances of taking the match from the Bison on their home court.

Chelsea Anderson had a team-high 26 digs for Bucknell, while Sydlowski and Henderson added 23 and 15 digs, respectively, to post double-doubles. Jessica Le and Shannon Pitsch shared setting duties, finishing the night with 32 and 27, respectively.

Colgate returns to Cotterell Court for its next match against league power American University on Oct. 21, at 7 p.m.
