Meckley’s Tally at 5:10 Wins the Game for the Raiders

Boxscore

HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/12/05) - Senior midfielder Bryant Meckley (Hanover, Pa./Southwestern) scored the lone goal in Colgate men’s soccer 1-0 victory over Philadelphia on Wednesday at Van Doren Field.

With four soccer games being played in a matter of six days and the constant rain that has pelted the Northeast in the past week, Van Doren Field had seen better days. With a mud-laden field and the rain still coming down the teams had to adjust their play to the conditions knowing some balls wouldn't take the bounces they would normally.

Meckley scored just 5:10 into the contest when he was running up on Philadelphia’s Mike Wallover in net. Wallover made a gutsy move when he came out of the net to try to run up and grab the ball but ended up slipping and falling in the mud. Meckley shot the ball to the left of Wallover to set up his ball and then hit a sharp shot from 15 yards out. A Philadelphia player was racing on and tried to cover the net but the ball rolled across the goal line. The defender did get a leg on the ball but it was clearly inside the white goal marker after the goal had beeen signaled.

Making his first collegiate start in net for Colgate was David Cappuccio (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford-Mendon). Cappuccio made seven saves in his first win and first shutout of his college career. Philadelphia’s Wallover made six stops in the loss.

The Rams held an 18-13 advantage in shots and had the upper hand in corner kicks, 6-3.

The Rams fall to 3-8-1 while the Raiders improve to 6-4-2 and break the series deadlock, 3-2.

The Colgate men’s soccer team returns to Van Doren Field on Saturday, October 15 when they take on Patriot League opponent Navy at 7 p.m.
