Black Knights Drop Colgate Volleyball 3-0

Katrina Zawojski and Allie Nichols both post double-doubles for the Raiders.

HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/01/2005)—The Army volleyball team used a balanced attack this evening to hand Colgate University a 3-0 setback in Patriot League play on Cotterell Court. The Black Knights got at least five kills from six different players to remain unbeaten in league action.

The Raiders fall to 2-15 overall and 1-3 in league play with the 30-28, 30-21, 30-21 loss. Army improves its mark to 10-2 overall and 4-0 in conference matches.

Freshman Katrina Zawojski (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) and senior setter Allie Nichols (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento) both recorded double-doubles. Her seventh of the season, Zawojski led everyone with a game-high 13 kills and 10 digs, while Nichols added 31 assists and 11 digs. Sophomore Sheila Giovannini (Waltham, Mass./Arlington Catholic) had eight kills. Freshman libero Jackie Adlam (Marin, Calif./Marin Academy) recorded a game-high 15 digs.

The first game was entertaining back and forth action that featured 19 ties and no lead more than four points. Colgate used a 7-3 run midway through the game to go ahead 21-17, but the Black Knights battled back with an 11-5 streak to take a 28-27 lead. The Raiders tied the game again with a block by Giovannini. That would be as close as the Raiders would get as Army rattled off the next two points to capture the game.

Colgate continued its strong play in the beginning of the second game, leading 8-5. However, the Black Knights found their rhythm offensively and never looked back on their way to the 30-21 win. The third game was much of the same for the Raiders. Colgate took and early lead before Army broke open their 12-11 lead with a 7-3 run.

Colgate continues its four-game homestand on Oct. 7, hosting Lehigh on Cotterell Court at 7 p.m.
