HAMILTON, N.Y. - Becky Irvine tallied the game-winning goal in overtime as the Colgate women's hockey team improved to 5-1-1 with a 3-2 win over Wayne State. It is Colgate's first win in overtime since a 2-1 victory at Vermont in February of 2001.
Wayne State started the scoring in the first period, when Heidi Burns scored an even-strength tally from Kelly Zamora and Kristi Thome.
Despite controlling the puck for most of the first stanza the Raiders were unable to score on 11 shots. Rebecca Lahar (Vienna, Va.) stopped 10 of the 11 shots she faced in the first period.
Colgate came out firing in the second period, outshooting the Warriors 13-4 in the frame. Finally the hard work paid off when Kara Bachman (Chicago, Ill.) found the back of the net on a scramble in front. Becky Irvine (Lakeview, N.S.) and Amanda Barre (Grafton, Ont.) were credited with the helpers on the game-tying goal.
Rebecca Lahar stopped all four shots in the stanza, while Wayne State netminder Anna VaderMarliere recorded 12 saves.
Wayne State regained the lead at 5:05 of the third period when Kelly Zamora found the net on a power-play tally. Joanie Denby and Jessica Haydahl were credited with the assists.
Colgate registered the equalizer on a great goal by freshman Ashley Bradford (Burnaby, B.C.) at the 9:04 mark of the final stanza. Carly McNaughton (Lethbridge, Alb) and Tara French (Truro, N.S.) set up the play nicely. For Bradford it is her first collegiate goal and it is French's first collegiate point.
The teams played the rest of the game scoreless and headed to overtime tied at two. 59 seconds into the extra period Irvine tipped in Shelby Nelson's (Osterville, Mass.) shot from the point for the game-winner.
Colgate outshot its opponent for the sixth straight game, 33-22 and went 1-4 on the power play. Wayne State finished 1-3 with the extra skater advantage.
Rebecca Lahar made 20 saves in net for her fifth win of the campaign.
The same two teams are back in action Saturday, November 1, at 2 p.m. in Starr Rink.
